Honolulu City Lights

Nothing is more iconic during Christmas time in downtown Honolulu than the 21-foot tall, 2-ton Shaka Santa & Mrs. Claus (Tutu Mele) relaxing with their shoes off and basking in the warm Hawaiian weather in the courtyard in front of Honolulu Hale (City Hall).

It all started back in 1985, when Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi created a free event that included a lighted tree on the main lawn, decorated tree display in the courtyard, holiday concert and displays of light on the trees and buildings from downtown to the civic center. It's gotten bigger and better every year since then.

Opening night festivities attract thousands of visitors and residents as downtown Honolulu lights up the holiday season from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Mayor flips the switch at 6 p.m. for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Honolulu Hale, as the Electric Light Parade begins at Aala Park and makes its way down King Street through downtown Honolulu.

There are also food booths, keiki rides, and decorated trees and wreaths on display in the Honolulu Hale Courtyard, as well as visits with Santa. Stroll through the "Corridor of Lights" and see the magical light displays on downtown Honolulu buildings. (via GoHawaii.com )

It's a real sight to see if you drive by the area at night, but the event is actually so much more than just the parade and outdoor displays.

The courthouse is full of Hawaiian Themed Christmas Trees decorated by local organizations as well as, the many departments of City & County workers of Honolulu. It's an ongoing competition, and it's different every year. They really put a lot of work into their displays and are sure to amaze people of all ages.

Easily the best Christmas attraction in the islands.
